Oak Island’s Money Pit:
The Dig Just Keeps Getting Deeper

In 1795, 16-year-old Daniel McGinnis set out to explore a small island off the coast of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. There he happened upon a large oak tree in a clearing on the north end of the island. One of the tree’s branches was severed and an old tackle box hung from it, under which there was a large circular depression in the ground, indicating some kind of refilled hole. Daniel’s curiosity was piqued, as rumor of pirates burying their treasure had long persisted in the area. So the next day, he returned with two friends to help with the excavation. Although the young men only dug for 30 feet before running out of steam, they opened a hole, out of which unleashed the Oak Island mystery. To date, this fascinating saga has cost six lives, millions of dollars, and has occupied the imagination of countless people.

The answers to that question lie in Haiti’s turbulent history.
